Painful Periods? You May Have Endometriosis

Too many women are crippled by severe period pain every month and it’s not normal. Painful periods are not ‘part and parcel of being a women’ as we’re so often led to believe – pain is your body’s way of alerting you to a problem.

So if you suffering from debilitating period pain, it’s time to listen to your body as you may have endometriosis.

Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease that is that occurs when tissues similar to those that line the uterus grow elsewhere in the body. These tissues shed in the same way that the uterus does every month, except this time, there’s nowhere for the blood to exit the body. Blood, where it shouldn’t be, is corrosive. This can cause pain, inflammation and the development of scar tissue and adhesions.

Endometriosis Symptoms

Symptoms can include:

  • Chronic pain, notably pelvic pain
  • Extreme period pain, including pelvic, back and leg pain.
  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Blood clotting
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating (often called “the endo belly”)
  • Depression
  • Low immune system
  • Painful bowel or urine movements
  • Painful sex
  • Fertility complications
  • Nausea and vomiting with periods

The issue with endometriosis is that it takes, on average, 7.5 years to receive a diagnosis¹.

By the time I received my official diagnosis (which took over a decade), I already had this under control through a natural approach. The diagnosis was to confirm what I had suspected, that this was in fact endometriosis.

Knowing what you’re dealing with should be the first step, not the last.

I was told I was too young to have endometriosis and so I struggled to figure out where the pain was coming from. Had I known it was endometriosis, I could have treated it as such – like I do now through a combination of an anti-inflammatory diet, herbal remedies, movement practices and relaxation techniques.

Endometriosis is far more prevalent than it receives attention for – 1 in 10 women of reproductive age have it. That’s 176 million women worldwide!

Don’t let your pain be a secret. If you think you may have endometriosis, it’s important to get this checked out.
