8 Tips to Help You Get the Most Out of Your Breakfast

Numerous studies have shown an association between skipping breakfast and poor health. By missing the first meal of the day you may be at a greater risk of having high cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and sugar levels.

8 Tips to Help You Get the Most Out of Your Breakfast

1. Plan ahead – Prepare breakfast the night before if you are short for time. If you can make it to go- even better!

2. Include protein – This will increase your fullness throughout the day by reducing your hunger hormones, and will ultimately reduce snacking. Here are some healthy plant-based protein foods you can incorporate into your daily breakfast.

3. Consume foods with high fiber content – This will help you feel full, and will help stabilize your sugar levels and cholesterol levels. Fruits and vegetables are high in fibre and are a great source of other vitamins and minerals.

4. Avoid breakfast cereals – Although this is a very common breakfast meal in North America, most cereals on the market are high in sugar, and low in fiber.

5. Change it up! – Eating the same thing every day may get repetitive, so have a variety of breakfast foods. This will not only keep it fun, but will allow you to get different nutrients.

6. Enjoy what you are eating – This will make it easier for you to eat breakfast since you will actually look forward to what you are eating.

7. Avoid heavy, processed foods – These include the typical breakfasts you find at your local fast food chains. Muffins, pastries, croissants, breakfast sandwiches etc..usually contain high fat and high sugar content.

8. Avoid store bought juices – Orange juice is another typical food most people have for breakfast. With the high sugar and low fibre content of store bought pasteurized varieties, these juices tend to spike your blood sugar levels dramatically. If you are going to have juice, make it yourself and increase your nutrients by juicing your veggies instead of the typical fruits.

I personally love breakfast smoothies. They are easy to make all while being nutritious and delicious! Not to mention if you have a sensitive stomach and are typically not hungry for a big meal in the mornings, smoothies provide a convenient way to take your breakfast with you while being gentle on your digestion.

Browse around the recipes on this site and choose some breakfast foods to your liking to be healthier. Make sure to include some protein food along with your smoothie, or simply put some in your smoothie. For example, add in a table spoon of hemp seeds. This is a great smoothie example rich with antioxidants and fibre from the fruit and kale, and protein from the kale.

The possibilities of healthy and delicious breakfasts are endless!
